Gallstones Cause Varicose Veins, Problems of The Heart, Spleen, Hormones, Circulation And Congestion

Gallstones in the liver may lead to poor circulation, enlargement of the heart and spleen, varicose veins, congested lymph vessels, and hormone imbalances. When gallstones have grown large enough to seriously distort the structural framework of the lobules (units) of the liver, blood flow through the liver becomes increasingly difficult. This not only raises the venous blood pressure in the liver, but also raises it in all the organs and areas of the body that drain used blood through their respective veins into the liver's portal vein. Restricted blood flow in that portal vein causes congestion, particularly in the spleen, stomach, esophagus, pancreas, gallbladder, and small and large intestines. This can lead to an enlargement of these organs, to a reduction of their ability to remove cellular waste products, and to a clogging of their respective veins.

A varicose vein is one that is so dilated that the valves do not sufficiently close to prevent blood from flowing backward. Sustained pressure on the veins at the junction of the rectum and anus in the large intestine leads to the development of hemorrhoids, a type of varicose vein. Other common sites of varicose veins are the legs, the esophagus, and the scrotum. Dilation of veins and venules (small veins) can occur anywhere in the body. It always indicates an obstruction of blood flow.

Almost all types of heart disease have one thing in common: blood flow is being obstructed. But blood circulation does not become disrupted easily. It must be preceded by a major congestion of the bile ducts in the liver. Gallstones obstructing the bile ducts dramatically reduce or cut off the blood supply to the liver cells. Reduced blood flow through the liver affects the blood flow in the entire body, which, in turn, has a detrimental effect on the lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system, which is closely linked with the immune system, helps to clear the body of harmful metabolic waste products, foreign material, and cell debris. All cells release metabolic waste products into, and take up nutrients from, a surrounding solution, called extracellular fluid or connective tissue. The degree of nourishment and efficiency of the cells depends on how swiftly and completely waste material is removed from the extracellular fluid. Since most waste products cannot pass directly into the blood for excretion, they accumulate in the extracellular fluid until they are removed and detoxified by the lymphatic system. The potentially harmful material is filtered and neutralized by lymph nodes that are strategically located throughout the body. One of the key functions of the lymphatic system is to keep the extracellular fluid clear of toxic substances, which makes this a system of utmost importance.

Poor circulation of blood in the body causes an overload of foreign, harmful waste matter in the extracellular tissues and, consequently, in the lymph vessels and lymph nodes as well. When lymph drainage slows down or becomes obstructed, the thymus gland, tonsils, and spleen start to deteriorate quite rapidly. These organs form an important part of the body's system of purification and immunity. In addition, microbes harbored in gallstones can be a constant source of recurring infection in the body, which may render the lymphatic and immune systems ineffective against more serious infections, such as infectious mononucleosis, measles, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, syphilis, and the like.

Owing to restricted bile flow in the liver and gallbladder, the small intestine is restricted in its capacity to digest food properly. This permits substantial amounts of waste matter and poisonous substances, such as cadaverines and putrescines (breakdown products of putrefied food), to seep into the lymphatic ducts. These toxins, along with fats and proteins, enter the body's largest lymph vessel, the thoracic duct,at the cysterna chyli. The cysterna chyli are dilated lymph vessels in the shape of sacks, situated in front of the first two lumbar vertebrae at the level of the belly button.

Toxins, antigens, and undigested proteins from animal sources, including fish, meat, eggs, and dairy foods, as well as leaked plasma proteins, cause these lymph sacks to swell and become inflamed. When the cells of an animal become damaged or die, which happens seconds after it is killed, its protein structures are broken down by cellular enzymes. These so-called 'degenerate' proteins are useless for the body, and they become harmful unless they are promptly removed by the lymphatic system. Their presence usually invites enhanced microbial activity. Viruses, fungi, and bacteria feed on the pooled wastes. In some cases, allergic reactions occur.

When the cysterna chyli(lymph sacks) are overtaxed and congested, the lymphatic system is no longer able to sufficiently remove even the body's own degenerate proteins (from worn-out cells). This results in lymph edema. While lying on the back, existing lymph edema can be felt as hard knots, sometimes as large as a fist, in the area of the belly button. These 'rocks' are a major cause of middle and low back pain and abdominal swelling, and, in fact, of most symptoms of ill health. Many people who have grown a 'tummy' consider this abdominal extension to be just a harmless nuisance or a natural part of aging. They don't realize that they are breeding a living 'time bomb' that may go off some day and injure vital parts of the body. Anyone with a bloated abdomen suffers from major lymph congestion.

Some 80 percent of the lymphatic system is associated with the intestines, making this area of the body the largest center of immune activity. This is no coincidence. The part of the body where most disease-causing agents are combated or generated is, in fact, the intestinal tract. Any lymphedema, or other kind of obstruction in this important part of the lymphatic system, can lead to potentially serious complications elsewhere in the body.

Wherever a lymphduct is obstructed, lymph has also accumulated at some distance from the obstruction. Consequently, the lymph nodeslocated in such an area can no longer adequately neutralize or detoxify the following things: dead and live phagocytes and their ingested microbes, worn-out tissue cells, cells damaged by disease, products of fermentation, pesticides in food, toxic antibodies contained in most plant foods, inhaled or otherwise ingested chemical particles, cells from malignant tumors, and the millions of cancer cells every healthy person generates each day. Incomplete destruction of these things can cause these lymph nodes to become inflamed, enlarged, and congested with blood. Infected material may enter the bloodstream, causing septic poisoning and acute illnesses. In most cases, though, the lymph blockage occurs slowly, without any symptoms other than swelling of the abdomen, hands, arms, feet, or ankles, or sometimes puffiness in the face and eyes. This is often referred to as 'water retention', a major precursor of chronic illness.

Continuous lymphatic obstruction usually leads to chronic health problems. Almost every chronic illness results from congestion in the cysterna chyli. Eventually, the thoracic duct, which drains the cysterna chyli, is overburdened by the constant influx of toxic material and becomes clogged up, too. The thoracic duct is linked with numerous other lymph ducts that empty their waste into the thoracic 'sewer canal'.

Since the thoracic duct has to remove nearly 85 percent of the body's daily-generated cellular waste and other potentially hazardous material, a blockage there causes backing up of waste into other, more distant parts of the body.

When the daily-generated metabolic waste and cellular debris are not removed from an area in the body for a certain length of time, symptoms of disease start to manifest. The following are but a few typical examples of illness indicators that result directly from chronic, localized lymph congestion:

Obesity, cysts in the uterus or ovaries, enlargement of the prostate gland, rheumatism in the joints, enlargement of the left half of the heart, congestive heart failure, congested bronchi and lungs, swelling or enlargement of the neck area, stiffness in the neck and shoulders, backaches, headaches, migraines, dizziness, vertigo, ringing in the ears, earaches, deafness, dandruff, frequent colds, sinusitis, hay fever, certain types of asthma, thyroid enlargement, eye diseases, poor vision, swelling in the breasts, breast cancer, kidney problems, lower back pains, swelling of the legs and ankles, scoliosis, brain disorders, memory loss, stomach trouble, enlarged spleen, irritable bowel syndrome, hernia, polyps in the colon, and others.

The thoracic duct typically empties its detoxified waste contents into the left subclavian vein at the root of the neck. This vein enters the superior vena cava, which leads straight into the heart. In addition to blocking proper lymph drainage from the various organs or parts of the body, congestion in the cysterna chyli and thoraciuct permits toxic materials to be passed into the heart and heart arteries. This unduly stresses the heart. It also allows these toxins and disease-causing agents to enter the general circulation and spread to other parts of the body. Hardly a disease can be named that is not caused by lymphatic obstruction. Lymph blockage, in most cases, has its origin in a congested liver. In the extreme eventuality, lymphomaor cancer of the lymph may result, of which Hodgkin's disease is the most common type.

When the circulatory system begins to malfunction because of gallstones in the liver, the endocrine system starts to be affected as well. The endocrine glands produce hormones that pass directly from the glandular cells into the bloodstream, where they influence bodily activity, growth, and nutrition. The glands most often affected by congestion are the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal cortex, ovaries, and testes. A more severely disrupted circulatory function leads to imbalanced hormone secretions by the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas and the pineal and pituitary glands. Blood congestion, which is characterized by the thickening of the blood, prevents hormones from reaching their target places in the body in sufficient amounts and on time. Consequently, the glands go into hypersecretion (overproduction) of hormones.

When lymph drainage from the glands is inefficient, the glands themselves become congested. This brings about hyposecretion (lack) of hormones. Diseases related to imbalances of the thyroid gland include toxic goiter, Graves' disease, cretinism, myxoedema, tumors of the thyroid, hypoparathyroidism. Thyroid disorders can also reduce calcium absorption and cause cataracts,as well as behavioral disorders and dementia.Poor calcium absorption, alone, is responsible for numerous diseases, including osteoporosis (loss of bone density). If circulatory problems disrupt the secretion of balanced amounts of insulin in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans,diabetes may develop.

Gallstones in the liver can cause liver cells to cut down protein synthesis. Reduced protein synthesis, in turn, prompts the adrenal glands to overproduce cortisol,a hormone that stimulates protein synthesis. Too much cortisol in the blood gives rise to atrophy of lymphoid tissue and a depressed immune response, which is considered the leading cause of cancer and many other major illnesses.

An imbalance in the secretion of adrenal hormones can cause a wide variety of disorders, as it leads to weakened febrile response (fever) and diminished protein synthesis. Proteins are the major building blocks for tissue cells, hormones, and so forth. The liver is capable of producing many different hormones. Hormones determine how well the body grows and heals.

The liver also inhibits certain hormones, including insulin, glucagon, cortisol, aldosterone, thyroid, and sex hormones. Gallstones in the liver impair this vital function, which may increase hormone concentrations in the blood. Hormone imbalance is an extremely serious condition and can easily occur when gallstones in the liver have disrupted major circulatory pathways that are also hormonal pathways. For example, by failing to keep blood cortisol levels balanced, a person may accumulate excessive amounts of fat in the body. If estrogens are not broken down properly, the risk of breast cancer increases. If blood insulin is not broken down properly, the risk of cancer rises, and the cells in the body may become resistant to insulin, which is a major precursor of diabetes.

Disease is naturally absent when blood flow and lymph flow are both unhindered and normal. Both types of problems - circulatory and lymphatic - can be successfully eliminated through a series of liver flushes and prevented by following a balanced diet and lifestyle.

Older Women With Breast Cancer Probably Won't Die From It: Study (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, June 21 (HealthDay News) -- Older women with breast cancer are more likely to die from cardiovascular disease and other causes than from their cancer, a new study finds.

Researchers analyzed data from more than 60,000 women in the United States, aged 66 and older, who were followed for at least 12 years after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

By the end of the follow-up period, nearly half of the women were still alive. Those who died lived to an average age of 83 and more than two-thirds of them died from causes other than breast cancer. In fact, cardiovascular disease killed more of the women than breast cancer.

Women who were most likely to die of breast cancer included those who were diagnosed at a younger age and those with a high tumor grade or estrogen receptor-negative status.

The pattern seen among the women in the study matches the pattern for women in the general population, where cardiovascular disease is the leading killer, the researchers said.

The study appears June 21 in the journal Breast Cancer Research.

"Cancer is a big killer and is responsible for about a quarter of all deaths. However, breast cancer is not necessarily a death sentence and patients need to take care of their health to reduce their risk of dying from heart disease and other age-related diseases," study author Jennifer Patnaik, of the University of Colorado, said in a journal news release.

Years of Air Pollution May Be Tied to Uncontrolled Asthma (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, June 21 (HealthDay News) -- A strong association exists between long-term exposure to air pollution and uncontrolled asthma, new research indicates.

The study included 481 adults with asthma who provided details about their respiratory health between 2003 and 2007. The researchers compared this information with levels of three types of air pollution -- ozone (O3), nitrous oxide (NO2) and particulate matter (PM10) -- in the five cities in France where the participants lived.

About 44 percent of the participants had well-controlled asthma, 29 percent had partially controlled asthma and 27 percent had uncontrolled asthma. Women and older people were more likely to have uncontrolled asthma.

There was a strong association between poorer asthma control and levels of ozone and particulate matter. The risk of uncontrolled asthma was 69 percent higher among those with long-term exposure to ozone and 35 percent higher for those with long-term exposure to particulate matter.

The study appears online June 21 in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

"Our results indicate that both ambient O3 and PM10 concentrations jeopardize asthma control in adults," the researchers concluded in a journal news release. "Our results are robust."

HIV guidelines to help homosexuals, trans-gender people (Reuters)

GENEVA (Reuters) – Homosexual men and trans-gender people should get equal access to HIV/AIDS programs under the World Health Organization's first guidelines aimed at ending stigma that denies quality care to many, the U.N. agency said on Tuesday.

WHO also reported evidence of HIV infections surging again among men who have sex with men and people who change their gender, particularly in Western countries. The two groups are already hard hit by the AIDS epidemic that began 30 years ago.

"This is the first time that WHO, as a U.N. agency together with other partners, is putting this forward. It is sensitive but is right to the point and is really critical for the epidemic," Dr. Gottfried Hirnschall, director of the HIV/AIDS department at the WHO, told a news briefing.

The 21 recommendations form "the first global public health guidelines" to focus on homosexual men and trans-gender people, the WHO said in a statement. They are designed to help health care workers and policymakers overcome entrenched discrimination and offer them testing, counseling and life-saving treatment.

Homosexual men are 20 times more likely to be infected with the virus than males in the general population, and rates are even higher in Mexico, Thailand and Zambia, according to the United Nations agency. HIV infection rates among trans-gender people range from 8 to 68 percent, depending on the country.

An estimated 2 to 4 percent of males have reported having sex with another man during their lifetime, Hirnschall said.

"Certainly one thing that we know is that MSM behavior (men who have sex with men) exists in all cultures. Obviously, the level of acceptance and cultural mystification varies from culture to culture," he added.

CRIMINALISED SEXUAL Behavior

More than 75 countries criminalize same-gender sexual activity, according to the WHO. "And trans-gender people lack legal recognition in most countries," it said.

This forces many homosexuals and trans-gender people to risk criminal sanctions if they seek help from a health care worker. Police often have authority to harass support groups, it said.

"Because of the stigma, the discrimination, they will often access services late, they may not access them at all and often if they do access them the quality of services provided to them may be inferior," Hirnschall said.

"If a trans-gender, in many parts of the world, comes to a health service, she gets chased away at the door," he said. "If she ever makes it by the guy at the door, the next question is 'where do we put her, in which ward do we put her?.'"

George Ayala, executive officer of the San Francisco-based Global Forum on MSM and HIV, said that health care services should offer an environment that is "welcoming and safe."

"It is difficult to respond with even the best of interventions that we have available to us if individuals run the risk of violence, of ridicule, of other forms of humiliation on their way to accessing services," he said.

Hua Boonyapisomparn, a trans-gender activist from Thailand, said that trans-gender communities have been "invisible" in national and international health care programs.

"HIV guidelines are an important, historic step which is a hope for trans-gender community to ensure that their voice will be heard at all levels," she told reporters in Geneva.

"Most people who get palliative care are still in their own homes," said Dr. Porter Storey, executive vice president of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

According to Dr. Storey, in Europe, Canada, and Australia, all care is synonymous, but in the United States, palliative care is also used when people are still pursuing a cure for their illness. Because of U.S. government rules, hospice is limited to those with six months or less to live.

A recent study that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine of 151 patients determined that of the 86% of surviving patients, "Patients assigned to early care had a better quality of life than did patients assigned to standard care." In addition, survival was longer in those who received early palliative care.

The New England Journal of Medicine study also stated that these care programs have the potential to reduce hospital expenditures-an important issue in a time of rising health care costs.

A Team Approach to Serious Illness

This kind of care is provided by a team of professionals-including doctors, nurses, social workers, nutritionists, chaplains and others-who have received board certification specifically for care. The team works in conjunction with the patient, in home caregivers and other loved ones, as well as with the patient's own doctor.

Once you've decided to end the aggressive treatments and therapies, it's time for palliative care, said Alex Morrison, Homewatch Caregiver's field sales and support manager in Denver, Colorado. Mr. Morrison's parents died within 36 hours of one another in March. These stories are about people with illnesses such as lung disease (the study written about in the New England Journal of Medicine focused on patients with newly diagnosed metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer), cancer, dementia, liver failure, heart disease and many more.

And while some of these are survivor stories, Dr. Storey said that people can and should seek out palliative care when they are not certain of the possible outcomes. "There are more and more medical treatments for people who are really sick," he said. "Lots of people are in this limbo and not ready for hospice." This is where a special kind of care comes in and has been developed to address the questions patients and their families may have about treatments, home care resources, and more.

Palliative care is now available in at least 70% of U.S. hospitals (those with over 300 beds), and a directory on the Center to Advance Palliative Care website, provides a list and links to those facilities.

Not only does palliative care assist patients with serious and life-threatening illness, but also their caregivers. "Families really don't know what to do," said Dr. Storey. "And they are concerned about what to do next."

Dr. Storey said that both hospice and palliative should be used sooner by patients and their loved ones. "Hospice is still a wonderful, wonderful service that people don't elect to use early enough. And hospice has the widest array of services in the home," he said. "It's not like palliative is a substitute for hospice. It's a marvelous support for the caregivers and should be used sooner."

New AIDS guidelines target global discrimination of gays (AFP)

GENEVA (AFP) – The World Health Organisation published Tuesday new global guidelines for expanding AIDS treatment, focusing for the first time on homosexuals, who face discrimination in many countries.

"If we do not pay major attention to the epidemic in key populations, we will not be able to eliminate HIV" -- the virus that can lead to AIDS, said Gottfried Hirnschall, WHO director of the HIV/AIDS department.

"Men having sexual relations with other men" as well as transsexuals represent those who were "disproportionately affected by the epidemic of HIV about 30 years ago and it continues to be so," Hirnschall said at a press conference in Geneva.

He added that the UN health agency has even seen a resurgence of the HIV epidemic, especially in industrialised countries.

"The dramatic fact is that MSM (men having sex with men) are estimated to be 20 times more likely to be HIV infected than the general population," he said.

In some countries and regions, up to 40 percent of homosexuals are estimated to be HIV positive, according to the WHO.

Given the sobering statistics, the WHO said it was launching new guidelines, aimed at the specific health needs of homosexuals.

The WHO said that many homosexuals suffer due to lack of access to adequate care, often because of discrimination against gays.

Homosexual activity is illegal in no fewer than 75 countries, most of them in Africa, and some also do not legally recognise transsexuals, the global health agency said.

"They are exposed to harassment, exclusion, discrimination, violence" in many aspects of their life, work, education, as well as the health care system, Hirnschall said.

"Because of the stigma, because of the discrimination, they often access services late," he said, or they may not be able to get treatment at all.

"There is quite a political backlash that we see in many parts of the world to actually give these groups the rights and the services that they need," he said.

The new guidelines in particular call for countries to adopt laws to end discrimination against gays and provide better access to treatment to reduce the number of new infections and save lives.

Dermatitis or scabies-both itchy skin conditions-have similar characteristics but are caused by different things. Dermatitis refers to a range of skin disorders which are characterized by an inflammation of the skin. Scabies, on the other hand, is caused by the infestation and burrowing of scabies mites within a person's skin. Scabies skin problems involves a parasite that lays eggs under the skin and it is quite contagious.

In contact dermatitis, an allergic response is triggered by a person's skin coming into contact with an allergen. This reaction results in bumps or blisters which weep, crack, and go red. There is an allergic response when one has a scabies problem, but one can have dermatitis due to problems with environmental triggers, food allergies and for lots of reason. Reddening of the skin also occurs in persons who become infested with Norwegian scabies, which occurs in people who have a low immune system and can spread around nursing homes.

A condition known as lichen simplex chronicus is a type of dermatitis which occurs on the neck, wrist, forearms, thighs or ankles. These are characterized by itchy skin that comes and goes. The patches can become "leathery" after a time, causing unevenness in skin texture and tone. In scabies, patches of skin on the same areas may also be affected by scabies mites. These patches may turn red and grow darker, such as in cases of Norwegian scabies.

Seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by reddish or yellowish, scaly, pimple-like lesions, which cause dandruff. These lesions can occur along the hairline, on the scalp, behind the ears, on the eyebrows, around the nose, on the chest, and on the upper back.

Another type of dermatitis known as varicose eczema is caused by a build-up of fluid under the skin, specifically the legs. This is unlike scabies, which is caused by infestation and burrowing of mites under the skin. However, both skin problems can cause blistering, discoloration, lesions and ulcers may develop in affected areas.

Whether you have dermatitis or scabies, both conditions cause skin dryness. Scabies is treated with a pesticide cream with permethrin. This is not available over the counter. Eczema is treated with both cortisone creams and moisturizers. One also needs to stay away from the allergens if it is atopic dermatitis.

Dermatitis and scabies, being two different skin problems, have to be medicated differently despite their similar manifestations. Dermatitis is usually treated with moisturizers, topical immunomodulators and steroid creams while scabies requires a scabicide. Ultimately, whether you have dermatitis or scabies, the important thing is to recognize the symptoms so that you know how to medicate the particular condition.

Here I am now, with my grandson Abram, in bed as usual.

I am approaching the 5 year anniversary of my Lyme crash, and having shared my medical history with several expert Lyme specialists (MDs) my diagnosis has extended to Babesia, (instigating the major crash) with Bartonella and Lyme in my body for most - if not all - of my life. You may have noticed that I haven't written much this year, and I apologize for that. I am committed to keeping this blog up-to-date with interesting and helpful information even after I fully recover which I now have hope for - yes, FULL recovery. I will not abandon the Lyme community when I have that strength and vitality back. That is my promise to you. However, the truth is, as I am starting to have really good days, and I try to pack as much living into each of those unique and special days and the result is that I use more energy than I have access to, and end up in worse shape - back in bed - my mind too frazzled to think much less research or write - until the next thimble of energy appears...

Perhaps this will resonate with some. I know that last year I didn't have the strength to plant one rose bush (my very favorite kind of gardening) and last weekend I planted a dozen with my husband's help! Last year I sat on my horse's back two or three times weeping the whole time while being lead by a friend, and last week I had an actual riding lesson!

What do I attribute my slow recovery to?

First, I must emphasize as always that I am NOT a medical doctor and can only share my experience - each of us have what I call Lyme disease cocktails, and each of us have unique "operating systems" medically speaking with our infinitely varying immune systems, our inflammation response, age, underlying health condition, genetic coding, and number/virility of disease(s) and diet. So what will work magically for one person will not do a thing for another. I know, this is all very frustrating!

Having said that, I divide recovery efforts into four major parts.

The first part is attacking the disease and destroying bacteria as well as hiding places (such as biofilms.) I have tried many protocols in order to write the ebooks on my website (still in progress) some of which take a long time to give a true chance. It is difficult to say that even though I may not have felt a change after a particular protocol that it didn't help in some way I was unaware of.

But aside from that, I believe the following have been the most important in my burgeoning recovery: parasite removal, salt/apple poly protocol, biofilm busting protocol (the last two I have to pulse because the herx response is staggering) and IVIG infusions (I will write another post on this). In addition, the pharmacology that has been imperative is Clarithromyacin, Hydroxychoroquine and Flagyl pulsed, Mepron for Babesia, and Rifampin for Bartonella (and Artemesinin as strong as I could get it). I find that Bartonella is every bit as hard if not harder to get rid of than Lyme. I had success with the homeopathic treatment (which needs a doctor's prescription) from Deseret Biologicals - I needed two treatments (and they should be mixed with Drainage Remedy and Silver Solution.)

The second and equally important part is building the immune system. I rely on Gold 360, Apple Poly, Strong Multi-Vitamins and Probiotics (see website for my treatment to see specifics and buying guide), IVIG infusions have boosted my immune system significantly and increased my energy in a measurable way (DANGER: Don't overdo as I repeatedly do), sleep and lots of it is required for healing, protection from stress: upsetting news - don't watch the TV, argumentative relationships - take a polite (indefinite) break, financial stress? Ask someone who cares about you to help you figure out a way to plan a budget that works and stick to it. Ask for help. I used to balance 9 checkbooks when I ran my own business and did it to the penny every month in less than two hours - now I can't balance one checkbook in a day or week. We need to accept where we are...when I finally did that I felt stress roll off my back but I have to stay diligent to keep it off.

The third part is emotional/social. Depending on how sick you are, you may not be able to socialize at all - which is the case with me. This puts tremendous strain on your family, loved ones and friends. It is so hard to be bitter...I have read so many of your notes regarding husbands or wives leaving, family members calling you crazy - no support. I have been blessed with a supportive husband and family but most of my friends - even close, close friends just disappeared and yet one friend who is a busy and successful artist in Hawaii has managed to find time to visit me 4 times half way around the world and sends care packages all the time...You can't let yourself become isolated, or your thoughts will spiral down to Dante's tenth circle of hell (well, he only had nine but I am taking the liberty of adding another - worse than all the others) "Pain and Abandonment". It is the place so many of us with chronic Lyme live day after day which is why suicide is not an uncommon way to die with chronic Lyme. Reach out to Lyme forums and support groups to make new friends who understand exactly what you are going through.

The fourth part is diet and exercise. I am not any kind of expert on this, however, the victims of Lyme who seem to recover fastest and live a more active life are the ones who have great discipline in their diet and exercise routine. Dr. Burrascano warns of pushing the body with aerobic exercise too early as it will weaken the body as it is trying to fight the illness, but stretching and some light exercise like walking can be beneficial. Also, remember that any foods that break down to sugar will feed your disease so think about what you eat and drink.

I hope this does not seem like an oversimplification. When you are in the thick of this awful disease, death does seem preferable for the most part, but science is moving fast and there are some great minds working on the puzzle of the Lyme cocktails. It is my sincere hope that my grandchildren won't have to worry about Lyme, Bartonella, Babesia or CPN. But for those of us that do - don't give up. You are not alone.

Serbs go from pill poppers to couch therapy (AFP)

BELGRADE (AFP) – After decades of widespread use of tranquillisers and antidepressants, readily prescribed by doctors, Serbians have discovered the wonders of couch therapy.

"A Benjo a day takes your troubles away," said a tongue-in-cheek Belgrade graffiti featuring the slang name of a popular antidepressant in the 1990s.

It became a mantra for many trying to escape the gloomy everyday life under the repressive rule of the late communist strongman Slobodan Milosevic.

The wars that led to the bloody dissolution of the former Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, the failing economy with dozens of people losing jobs every day, deteriorating living standards and international isolation pushed many to seek help in the form of a "magic pill".

"I simply could not force myself to get out of bed. Just a glance at the news and everything was falling apart. But with tranquillisers a couple of times a day, everything became bearable," said Darja Tosic, a 52-year mother of two.

It was easy to get the pills legally: they were cheap and a regular family doctor could write a prescription, she said.

Health controls were also more lenient with loose regulations on many drugs imported from China, India and Russia that were sold freely, so popping pills was easy.

But a regime change a decade ago brought new methods into what has traditionally been a conservative, macho society where discussing emotions was not encouraged.

Tosic is one of many who has since opted for help to a trained psychotherapist, a process she called a "revelation".

"I have other problems now and I still need help, but I have realised that uncontrolled absorption of pills is not a solution," said Tosic, who recently launched her own catering service after a year of therapy sessions.

"I've learnt to deal with the things that bother me, not to close my eyes and enjoy a mindless daze," she said.

While psychotherapy is not new in Serbia -- the first psychologists set up shop in the 1950s -- it is only recently that the stigma attached to it has lifted.

"It has become more common to talk about psychological issues, anxieties, depressions and stress-related disorders. People seek help more often," said therapist Kaja Damnjanovic.

It is not known how many trained therapists work in Serbia as the current legislation does not require them to register and the title is not protected.

However therapists interviewed by AFP said their business is now booming with some saying they have doubled the number of their patients in the last six months.

"If I could find the time, I would have been able to see six to eight clients a day, but it would be unprofessional," said Jelena Miric.

A study published by Serbia's Public Health Institute in 2009 demonstrated the trend. It was conducted to assess the effects of the 78-day NATO bombing campaign on Serbia in 1999, which ended Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic's repression on ethnic Albanian separatists in Kosovo.

The raids were punishing for many ordinary Serbs, who were forced to spend days in underground shelters, daring only to go out when sirens sounded the end of the attacks -- sometimes several a day.

Findings showed that in the 10-year period to 2009, the number of Serbs seeking psychological or psychiatric help had increased by 13 percent, meaning that by 2009 nearly a quarter of the country's 7.5 million population had turned to consulting professionals.

"Years of crisis in our country with numerous acute and chronic stressors have adversely affected the mental health of the population," the 2009 study said. "The absolute number of persons with depressive, stress related and psychosomatic disorders is on the rise."

Like many therapists, Miric charges around 20 to 30 euros (28 to 42 dollars) for an hour-long session, a considerable amount in a country where the average salary is around 350 euros a month.

Damnjanovic, a psychologist by training, said her clients are mostly "ordinary people, students and those who might belong to a middle class."

Many of those turning to therapy are still trying to adapt to the switch from socialism to a tough free market economy that demands assertiveness and competitiveness

Damnjanovic also pointed to the increased number of people believed to be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder following the brutal 1990s wars in the region.

A taboo subject just a decade ago, post-traumatic stress disorder has gotten attention as the country increasingly questions its role in the Balkan wars, where ethnic cleansing campaigns gave rise to atrocities unseen in Europe since World War II.

Some of this examination might have been been prompted by the high-profile arrests of ex-Bosnian Serb army chief Ratko Mladic, in May, and former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic in 2008, both after years on the run -- and widespread speculation EU-hopeful Belgrade knew their whereabouts all along. The two men are charged with genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague.

After years of trying to fight insomnia with sleeping pills, Marko, a former soldier who has fought in one of the conflicts, switched to therapy.

"I had nightmares, bad dreams, I feared crowds, I couldn't relax enough to fall asleep," said this 42-year-old who did not give his last name.

"Only when I realised I was at a dosage where I was one pill away from unintentional suicide, I decided to open up to a therapist," he told AFP.

"I finally can close my eyes without seeing the horrors I've seen," he said, adding that a full recovery is still far away.

Some Ulcer Symptoms

Nausea

This sensation involving discomfort and an urge to vomit can be due to an ulcer. Many medications have a possible side effect of inducing this sensation. Food poisoning is a common reason for nausea to be felt. Vomiting

This is somewhat linked to the previous item. In the case of being an ulcer symptom, the vomiting may be excessive. It can also occur when a person is going through a migraine. A condition known as ileus may bring it on to it as well. When a person overeats, vomiting might result. Blood sugar levels that are either high or low may lead to it, as well. If the patient becomes dehydrated, then bringing back the fluid levels (as well as electrolytes) to a normal range is a treatment method.

Excessive saliva production

When it presents as an ulcer symptom, the saliva may have a sour taste, but even in this condition its taste may be minimal. When occurring due to an ulcer, or because of gastrointestinal reflux disease, it is known as water brash. However, there are other cases in which there simply is extra production of saliva. It may show up in people who have oral ulcers. Some medications may lead to abnormally elevated levels of saliva. Certain toxins can also have the same effect. Consuming excess amounts of starch may also cause this to occur.

GERD can also show up amongst ulcer symptoms.

October 1793. Philadelphia, PA was a city under siege, gripped by panic and fear. A hot, humid summer gave way to an early autumn, and sickness swept The City Of Brotherly Love. It started with fever and chills, headaches and nausea. In its advanced stages, victims developed a yellow, jaundiced look as their kidneys failed. That gave the disease its name - yellow fever. The vast majority of Napoleon's army was wiped out and he was forced to sell his claims in the Southern United States at bargain basement prices. This sale, known as the Louisiana Purchase, doubled the size of the country's land at the time.

The disease outbreaks don't happen in the United States today, but they do in other parts of the world. In May, 2010 the outbreak in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, on the southern tip of Brazil, sicken dozens of people and killed nine.

Global public health agencies are watchdogs of public health, saving millions of lives on the planet, with most of their objectives fulfilled in poor and developing countries. That's the message the media has been putting out so successfully that most of us believe it is true. But there are hidden agendas, which often remain concealed. But once in a while, their so-called noble intentions are unraveled, laying bare a shocking reality.

Uganda

Among these was a web of deceit uncovered by an African radio broadcaster who discovered that mass immunizations with the OPV in Uganda were definitely not intended to save children from the debilitating paralytic disease.

Vaccinations with the OPV - which uses the live virus - began in Uganda in 1963, a country that had no history of polio while the government of Uganda introduced mass immunization at the behest of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1977.

Kihura Nkuba, the broadcaster, who had studied in England, had returned to Uganda to open a radio station there. But his experiences with the Ugandan people revealed a shocking story. Hundreds of Ugandan children who were being inoculated during government-enforced immunization drives were dying of polio. In other words, the OPV, quite literally being forced down their throats, was causing a disease that had not been present in Uganda till the vaccine was introduced in the 1960s.

Nkuba said that parents, who had made a connection between the vaccine and their children's deaths, would hide in the African bush when government officials and health volunteers came around to administer the OPV. In some cases, children were allegedly dragged out of hiding to be vaccinated.

It was only in 2002 that the penny dropped, when Nkuba made the connection between the discontinuation of the OPV in the US and its introduction in Uganda. The OPV, developed by Dr Albert Sabin in the 1950s and which used the live polio virus, had been banned from use in America because it had been observed to accidentally cause the disease in recipients of the vaccine. The US then reverted to using the Inactivated Polio Virus or IPV.

Instead of discarding vaccines worth millions of dollars, these suddenly useless but dangerous doses of the OPV were being force-fed to children in Uganda!

Nkuba realized another shocking truth - that the vaccine when administered in the US was contraindicated for use in families with a history of HIV. That is because the live virus used in the OPV gave rise to a condition called 'viral shedding'. This takes place when a vaccinated individual literally sheds the virus through mucous, feces and other bodily fluids for a period of time immediately after being vaccinated.

Naturally, the OPV was not recommended for use in families where individuals have a compromised immune system. But neither was this practice being observed in Uganda, where HIV was widespread, nor was the information being disseminated among the public. The catastrophe that this caused can only be imagined.

Nkuba went public with his observations on the OPV disaster on his radio station and was subsequently hounded and persecuted. Not surprisingly, his radio station was also shut down by the Ugandan government, which he openly accused of committing mass murder, hand in glove with the WHO, UNICEF, United States Association for International Aid (USAID) and CDC.

Nigeria

It is easy to use a vulnerable nation - where illiteracy rates are high, where disease is rampant and where global agencies have projected themselves as saviors of the people - as a human laboratory.

Like Uganda, Nigeria is another country where global health agencies have been accused of abusing the trust of the people, and worse still, of committing genocide. This has resulted in a triple whammy for this African nation. The country has seen severe outbreaks of polio, and even deaths, ever since Western health agencies began a mass OPV immunization campaign in 2002.

A year after the campaign kicked off, the drive was halted after the local people and Muslim clerics alleged that the vaccine contained material that left recipients infertile. The WHO resumed immunization, this time more 'aggressively' in 2006, in an attempt to cover as many people as possible. But then, soon after, Nigeria saw the beginning of its worst-ever polio outbreak, leaving 60-odd children paralyzed in 2007-2008 and more than 120 in 2009.

What went wrong in Nigeria? In a secret that cost the US CDC huge embarrassment and worldwide censure, the Nigeria outbreak was finally diagnosed as being vaccine-induced. The polio vaccine administered in 2002 resulted in the development of a mutant strain that was now causing the disease in healthy children who had not been vaccinated earlier.

How was this possible? The 'benevolence' of Western health agencies had placed Nigeria in a Catch-22 situation. Children were contracting polio either directly from the OPV while others were left open to the disease because they resisted immunization with a faulty vaccine!

The implication was that to be protected against the mutant polio virus, Nigerian children should have been immunized with a faulty vaccine. All because the WHO decided to 'dump' a vaccine that had been banned in the US.

Why didn't the agency use the IPV that was being used in the US? One, it saved the vaccine maker millions of dollars not to destroy millions of doses. Two, the OPV is cheap. And three, the OPV can be easily administered by health workers and volunteers, not necessarily doctors. This accounts for the popularity of the faulty vaccine in mass immunization efforts across Third World countries.

But it also left the WHO in another dilemma. Immunization programs in Nigeria had been aimed at the polio Type 2 virus but due to genetic mutation, the outbreaks post-2007 were caused by the Type 1 strain!

To cover up its mistakes and make sure they had not left out any known strain of the polio virus, immunization programs in Nigeria have since included two rounds of vaccination that target Types 1, 2 and 3 of the virus! Could there be a bigger mess?

Alas, Nigeria wasn't the only country affected by the OPV mistake. No less than 12 countries have reported cases of vaccine-induced polio over the last decade.During this time, 10 billion doses of the faulty OPV had been administered to children in developing countries, including outbreaks in the Dominican Republic and Haiti in 2002.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

It may seem like a mouthful, and this condition can also be shortened and referred to simply as COPD. It involves two things, one of which is chronic bronchitis. The second item that is present in COPD is emphysema. In this situation, the air flow becomes limited. Due to that, shortness of breath can occur. Coughing is another one of the symptoms that might be found in a patient with this pair of illnesses. The situation is most frequently brought on by smoking, although there are also other medical causes. Diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is confirmed using spirometry. At this time, no cure is known. The condition can be treated, though, such as by stopping smoking. Medication may also be used as a method of treatment. Most vaginal yeast infections are caused by a bloom C. albicans populations. Typical symptoms include an abnormal white discharge ranging from thin and watery to a chunky, cottage cheese-like consistency. There may also be redness and swelling of the vulva accompanied by itching or burning of the labia and vaginal tract. Both intercourse and urination may become painful.

Systemic Infections

In small populations, C. albicans acts like a yeast. The population remains localized and is easily controlled, but in a systemic infection, the bacteria has reached a level of population growth that enables it to act like a mold, sending long, root-like tendrils out into the surrounding tissues and even into nearby organs. The toxins produced by the bacteria start to significantly compromise the immune system, and symptoms become much more generic and life-threatening. Untreated mortality rates for systemic C. albicans infections have been estimated to be anywhere from 75% to almost 100%.

Instead of taking a big inhalation, take a slightly smaller inhale (about 20-40% less than your usual inhalation) using the abdominal muscles and then relax all muscles for exhalation, especially upper chest and other respiratory muscles. Make another (smaller or shorter) inhale and again relax. With each inhalation, practice this reduced or shallow breathing for 1-2 minutes while remaining relaxed.

Problem with a congested nose relates to your body oxygen levels that can be measured using a simple DY body oxygen test. Exhale normally and count your stress-free breath holding time, but only until the very first signs of stress or discomfort. Simply put, Osteoporosis is a degenerative disease that tends to make bones less dense and therefore weaker and more susceptible to fractures. Calcium is what we generally think of when it comes to bone health but recent research has shown that isoflavones, which are found in soy foods, may also be important.

Osteoporosis is particularly seen in post menopausal women but can occur in men and with other causes such as cancer treatments.

Surprisingly, or maybe not, osteoporosis was seldom seen less than 100 years ago. So it would appear that our environment and especially our diet habits are what is affecting the prevalence of osteoporosis.

Here are some ways to help prevent osteoporosis and to keep your bones in good condition.

1. Optimize levels of Vitamin D
You need vitamin D in order to absorb calcium properly, which is why it is often a component of a calcium supplement, but sun exposure is a good way to get the optimal amount, as well. Early morning hours are best because the sun's rays are less intense. Keep in mind that sunscreen blocks out up to 90% of the ability to produce vitamin D, so if skin cancer is a concern, a supplement may be best.

3. Decrease foods that are processed.
Breads, sugars and other processed foods should be eaten in moderation. Limit the use of soybean, corn and canola oils (these have omega 6 fatty acids rather than the better omega 3 fatty acids).

Other fresh veggies to include as part of a healthy bone diet are tomatoes, cucumbers, bok choy, kale, chinese cabbage and garlic, parsley and green onions.

6. Raw white onions have high levels of famma-glutamyl peptides that have been shown to increase bone density.

7. In PRE-menopausal women, it's a good idea to avoid gluten - which is found in wheat, oats, barley and rye.

Do not take calcium carbonate; a better choice would be calcium citrate or calcium hydroxyapaptite because they are absorbed more readily. Excess calcium can cause kidney or gallbladder stones and can interfere with the absorption of other important elements.

The supplement should be taken on an empty stomach and only 500mg at a time. (1000-1200 mg per day is the recommended dosage for menopausal women.)

9. Cut down on the acid reducers, as well.
Over the counter medications like Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid, tagamet, etc. are recommended for a 6-8 week course only! When used long-term, they inhibit the absorption of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and zinc which are all vital for good bone health.

10. Opt for less Pop
Carbonated beverages leach calcium from the bones and it is then discarded in your urine. They contain phosphates which like to bind with calcium and thus increases calcium loss.

11. Caffeine is another big culprit when it comes to decreasing the calcium in your bones.
Don't over-consume.

12. Reduce stress.
Stress increases cortisol levels which can cause bone loss when the levels remain elevated for extended periods of time. Yoga, Tai Chi, meditation, massage (don't we all love a good massage?), prayer, enough sleep, VACATIONS and support groups are good ways to decrease stress levels.

13. Exercise
Strength training and resisitance baed exercise such as walking, bicycling, weight lifting (and I'm going to add ballet) as little as 15-30 minutes a day can aid in bone health. Move it! Move it! Move it!

14. Have your hormone levels checked.
It's a good idea to know whether or not you are deficient in any or your hormone levels because a deficiency can be a risk for bone density loss. There may be more ways to combat a hormone deficiency than just by hormone replacement therapy.

Remember, it's never too early or too late to begin practicing ways to maintain healthy bones.

What Really Causes AIDS?

Over 35 diseases have now been renamed AIDS diseases, all supposedly caused by one single (inactive) virus. What has been considered normal pneumonia until 10-15 years ago, if linked with HIV, it is now an AIDS disease. The same applies to Candida infection, tuberculosis, Kaposi's sarcoma, and cervical cancer. If an African suffers from 'slim disease' and has HIV antibodiesin his blood, he is being told that he has AIDS. If he dies from the disease, he obviously must have died from AIDS. This simple logic may sound persuasive to a lay person.

On the other hand, if an African is diagnosed with having 'slim disease' without previous HIV infection and subsequently dies, AIDS is not considered the cause of death. It is worthy to note that there are at least as many cases of slim disease without HIV as there are with HIV, and that the retrovirus HIV has proven to be incapable of causing cell destruction, which is the main characteristic accompanying 'slim disease'.

If the HIV virus cannot be held responsible for causing AIDS diseases, then what is the cause of AIDS?

Narcotic Drugs

Roughly ten years before the discovery of AIDS, the industrial world experienced a dramatic increase in the use of non-prescribed drugs ranging from hashish, marijuana and psychedelics to LSD, MDA, PCP, heroin, cocaine, amyl and butyl nitrites, amphetamines, barbiturates, ethyl chloride, opium, mushrooms and other 'tailor-made' drugs. By 1974, five million Americans had used the drug cocaine, and only 11 years later, the figure had jumped to over 22 million. In 1990, the American Drug Enforcement Administration had confiscated 100,000 kilograms of cocaine, compared to a mere 500 kilograms in 1980. Within a decade, the number of cocaine overdose victims had increased from 3,000 in 1981 to 80,000 in 1990, an increase of 2,400 percent. Amphetamine use also jumped dramatically. In 1989, the Drug Enforcement Administration seized 97 million doses, up from 2 million doses in 1981. Also, aphrodisiacs became extremely popular during the 1970s. By 1980, five million Americans had become regular users of amyl nitrites, or 'poppers'.

The AIDS epidemic followed a huge jump in drug abuse. Every practicing physician who has seen the severe destruction of body and mind in drug-using patients understands that drugs are capable of doing even more harm to a person than just killing them. Drugs are known for their powerful effect of systematically destroying a person's vital functions, including the immune system. The figures given above can in no way represent the total use of drugs within the population, but they certainly indicate that drug abuse could be playing a major role, if not the biggest role in causing AIDS diseases. Most narcotic drug users have p24in their blood. An HIV test is likely going to turn them into HIV positive patients that 'need' treatment with expensive and potentially devastating AIDS drugs.

Until recently, drug use was most concentrated among young men aged 25-44, and so, AIDS was most common among this age group. Nine out of every ten AIDS cases were male and 90 percent of all people arrested for possession of hard drugs were male, too. 75 percent of these were aged 25-44 and 72 percent of all AIDS cases among men occurred within exactly the same age group. Could this have been pure coincidence?

Between 1983 and 1987, the death rate among young men of this age group increased by an average of 10,000 per year and so did the number of AIDS deaths within the same period. During the 1980s, deaths from drug overdoses doubled in men of this age group, while deaths from blood poisoning - an indirect result of the injection of drugs into the blood - quadrupled. The same happened to the AIDS sufferers of the same age group during the same period of time.

Now, more women are involved in heavy drug use. Three quarters of all heterosexual AIDS cases and two thirds of all female AIDS cases are injection drug users. Two thirds of all babies born with AIDS have mothers who inject drugs. These figures do not include the use of drugs taken orally or in an inhaled form.

The major percentage of AIDS cases, however, is still found among the highly active homosexual men aged 25-44. This group not only abuses large quantities of narcotic drugs, but also antibiotics, antifungals, and antivirals, such as AZT, ddI, ddC, d4T, acyclovir, and gancyclovir, to name a few. A large number of American studies confirmed that over 95 percent of male homosexual AIDS patients typically admitted to popper inhalation and regular use of hard drugs.

AIDS patients suffer from pre-existing immune damage, which in many cases is caused by years of drug abuse. Without an already damaged immune system, AIDS diseases are extremely unlikely to develop. If any of the above risk groups take an AIDS test they are highly likely to test positive, due to the large number of antibodies their bodies have produced to counteract diseases caused by drugs, semen, blood, and viruses, etc.

Why babies have AIDS

Babies are strongly affected by the drug abuse of their mothers. Two thirds of all babies with AIDS symptoms, regardless whether they test HIV-positive or not, have mothers who inject drugs; some large percentage of the rest have mothers who use non-injected drugs. Heroin is one of the most commonly injected drugs. Persistent drug users show symptoms of loss of white blood cells, the main upholder of immunity, as well as lymph node swelling, fever, rapid weight loss, brain dysfunction and dementia, and a marked susceptibility to infections. Heroin addicts often die from pneumonia, tuberculosis, and other opportunistic infections, as well as from wasting syndromes. In all these diseases, the protein p24, generally accepted to be proof of the existence of HIV, is amply present. Although p24 is not unique to HIV but shared with most infectious diseases, they have nevertheless been classified as AIDS diseases.

What is very sad is that babies are defenseless against drug poisoning. Recent research has shown that pregnant women who smoke cigarettes pass cancer-forming chemicals to their babies. It is difficult to imagine what must be taking place in the developing brain of an embryo when it is exposed to heroin injected directly into his mother's blood, which is also his blood.

Many babies born to cocaine-using mothers are born with severe mental retardation and are vulnerable to tuberculosis and lung diseases. The major experimental drugs are so poisonous that regular use can result in dementia, serious bacterial infections, and total destruction of the immune system. The drugs certainly possess a much higher probability of impairing immune functions so typical to AIDS than a simple, inactive virus.

Antibiotics

Most of the patients suffering from AIDS also have a long history of taking antibiotics. Antibiotics may be a major co-factor in developing AIDS among the very active homosexual men who depend on them in order to ward off the many venereal diseases and parasites arising from non-hygienic sexual practices. Many gays have received open prescriptions for antibiotics from their doctors who advised them to swallow the drugs before their sexual encounters. Some of them had been on such toxic drugs as Tetracycline for as many as 18 years before their immune system succumbed to the devastating side effects they produce. This particular drug causes extreme sensitivity against sunlight. If exposed to sunlight, it can burn one's skin beyond repair. Those affected often suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a form of depression that arises from lack of exposure to sunlight. The drug is also known to disrupt the body's basic metabolic functions, which may result in virtually any type of disease. It also works as a strong immune suppressant; and, perhaps, one of its worst side effects is the destruction of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Eradication of these bacteria makes room for yeast and other infection-causing bacteria, spreading throughout the body and causing continuous flare-ups of disease symptoms

Other commonly used drugs include flagyl and diiodohydroxquin. Both are used to combat amoeba-caused diarrhea. The drugs can produce severe forms of hallucination and depression.

Corticosteroids, sulfa drugs, and septra are prescribed for various other conditions, all with serious side effects. They cause severe digestive disturbances, and if worsened by a nutrient-deficient diet so common among active homosexuals, they systematically destroy their bodies' defenses against disease-causing bacteria, viruses and parasites. And so the formerly strong and healthy young men increasingly suffer from opportunistic infections which speed up aging indicators similar to those found only in old and fragile people.

Blood Transfusion

All the above mentioned risk factors cause 94 percent of all AIDS cases in the United States, a typical representative for other industrialized nations. Nevertheless, the remaining 6 percent do not seem to fall into any of the risk categories. Over half of this small percentage 'contracted' AIDS through blood transfusions, which to the general population would appear to be a definite indication for HIV to be the cause of AIDS.

However, a closer analysis of the AIDS survival statistics reveals that over half of all blood transfusion recipients die within the first year after transfusion. The same applies to patients who are not HIV-infected. The risk groups for failing blood transfusions are found among the very young and the very old, and those who are severely injured.

Under normal circumstances, healthy people never get a blood transfusion. They are given only to people who have already suffered from long-standing illnesses or after traumatic medical intervention, such as surgery. Anesthesia alone acts as an immune-suppressant, and the same applies to antibiotics administered after surgery to ward off infectious microbes. If a patient undergoes an organ transplant, he will receive steroids and other drugs that prevent his immune system from rejecting the new organ. Many organ recipients have to take these drugs for the rest of their lives, but since these drugs suppress overall immunity, they often die from 'unrelated' problems within a very short time. The treating doctors rarely attribute these deaths, though, to the side effects of the drugs, and tell the deceased's relatives that they tried everything they could to save their loved ones. If these same problems, however, occur in HIV-positive patients, the cause of death is considered to be AIDS. Accordingly, the victims become part of the 'statistical evidence' that AIDS can be transmitted through blood transfusion.

In the United States, out of the 20,000 hemophiliacs, who rely on regular blood transfusions, few are diagnosed with AIDS despite the fact that over three-quarters were infected with HIV through blood supply. Mortality rates for hemophiliacs, in fact, have never been as low as they are today.

It has been proven that blood transfusions can bring up false-positive HIV test results. In a study published in the Lancet, patients showed the presence of large quantities of HIV antibodies in their blood immediately after blood transfusion, decreasing thereafter. One healthy volunteer who received six consecutive blood injections at four-day intervals tested HIV-negative after the first injection, but with each subsequent transfusion, the HIV-positive antibody response increased. The argument that HIV can be transmitted through blood transfusions may, therefore, only be partially true, if it is true at all. As the above experiment shows, blood transfusions can actually produce human retrovirus material that may be identical or similar to HIV. This certainly doesn't mean that an AIDS disease will automatically develop because of blood transfusion (most hemophiliacs don't develop AIDS). However, if the immune system is already severely damaged or low due to other factors, such as drug abuse or surgery, blood transfusions can greatly increase the risk of developing a life-threatening immune deficiency disease or AIDS. If blood transfusions can lead to the body producing antibodies against the HIV human retrovirus, as research has shown to be possible, it is misleading to claim HIV-contaminated blood is solely responsible for HIV infection in blood recipients.

There's nothing to do with the worms! Ringworm is a skin infection that appears as a rash in a round or ring shape. But it's not painful or dangerous, it's simply itchy. This is usually affects the body or scalp and is very common to children.

Due to the fact that ringworm is awfully contagious and can easily be transmitted via direct and indirect contact, it is also becoming widespread in this day and most especially to children. Ringworm is an ordinary fungal infection where they get reddish or grey scaly, itchy and round shaped on their skin or scalp. Since children habitually share their things to others and are less probably to take hygienic protection and precautions than adults, fungal infections can spread quickly through a day-care center or your child's class at school.

Children can get ringworm from animals, usually from their own pet. You should see a doctor if you feel your daughter or son has ringworm to treat it right away. The doctor may prescribe an anti-fungal cream or an oral treatment depending on the status of the infected area.

Here are some things you must know to protect your child from the ringworm.

Ringworm is only slightly infectious, so children may continue to be present at school or daycare while undertaking treatment. Just remind them not walk barefoot in the gym or by the pool and even from a wet moist area like the comfort room or shower floor.

Be certain that everyone in your family washes their hands frequently. You must also wash everyone's bedclothes and blanket, clothes and towels, and throw away or just wash any combs and hairbrushes or garments that could spread the infection.

In addition, examine also your pets if a member in your family gets ringworm. Bring your pets to vets for a check-up to notice if there's a crusty bald patches of skin - a sign of a ringworm infection. Even if there are no signs of infection, take them still to the veterinarians because some animals can sometimes bring the fungus infection without showing any signs of it. Keep also animals out of bedrooms and off beds and furniture. And teach your child not to kiss pets and never to handle or touch an animal faces.

You don't have to keep your children away from their usual activities once you've started treating them. Just remember the preventions stated above to check and maintain your childcare and to avoid the ringworm from coming back.

For several years, it has been known that AIDS sufferers develop a drastic imbalance of very important amino acids before they actually deteriorate. A balanced protein metabolism is the main prerequisite for a healthy immune system. If the concentration of some of the amino acids in the body is too high or too low the immune system can no longer fight acute infections. This is particularly true for AIDS diseases.

The physiological imbalances related to basic protein metabolism in AIDS patients can be caused by any of the above factors, which all have highly stressful effects on the body. To combat such severe stress, the body triggers stress hormones, such as cortisone, designed to break down muscle proteins into basic amino acids needed for emergency reuse. This effectively means that the body is feeding off itself. If the stress persists, the amino acid balance can no longer be maintained, which eventually causes the collapse of the immune system so typically found in the AIDS disease.

During the process of destroying its own cells to obtain essential amino acids, the body has to deal with a large amount of cell debris, including the fragments from destroyed cell nucleus. It seems that some of these DNA or RNA fragments are labeled as the retrovirus HIV. Since there are various types of such fragments, there are also several types of HIV, i.e., HIV1, HIV2, etc. as well. This may explain why there are so many people now who are HIV-positive, but never were infected by HIV-contaminated blood or were in contact with HIV-infected people. Research by Dr. Hulda Clark, Canada, showed that babies can test HIV-positive, despite the fact that their parents are HIV-negative.

HIV is much more common than most people think. Many people who go through periods of extreme stress may have a strong presence of HIV in their blood for which their immune systems produce antibodies. Since they are unlikely to test for AIDS, they may never find out that they have encountered this virus. Even if they underwent a reliable AIDS test, they may not test positive for HIV1. However, if the test also searched for presence of antibodies for HIV3 or another of its variations, these individuals may now turn out to be HIV positive. For many years, the testing facilities in most countries could detect only one of the many HIV types. Today, a person's blood may be screened for two types of HIV, which is still not enough to determine whether he is HIV positive or not (considering the high false-positive rates of HIV tests).

Unless the individual's stress reaction continues, he may lead a perfectly healthy life. However, if stress-caused cellular destruction becomes a long-term issue, the amino acid balance becomes increasingly disturbed. This in turn may drain the immune system to such an extent that it can no longer defend the body against even the low-level infection-causing agents that permanently linger in everyone's body. When the host's immune system fails to neutralize the germs, a simple bacterium can cause a life-threatening infection, as seen among many AIDS patients.

Drug addicts, very active homosexuals, babies born to mothers with an unbalanced amino acid pool, people who are in need of a blood transfusion or had one, and those who are undernourished, starving, or are otherwise traumatized, all are suffering from an unbalanced amino acid pool and are, therefore, possible candidates for HIV particle generation.Intense stress responses cause the breakdown of cell nucleus, which results in an increased presence of DNA or RNA fragments. The first and natural response by the body is to produce antibodies to these fragments. Multiple Sclerosis, malaria, hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis, glandular fever, papilloma virus warts, and many other ailments can cause the body to make antibodies for the retrovirus p24.

If immunity becomes subdued through any major illness or constant stress, a flood of disease-causing agents begin to invade the body. Wherever the body is most vulnerable and exposed is where the AIDS disease is likely to strike first.

Bone tissue contains many blood and lymph vessels and nerves. The cells responsible for balanced bone growth are osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Osteoblasts are the bone-forming cells, whereas osteoclasts are responsible for resorption of bone to maintain optimum shape. A third group of cells, known as chondrocytes, are in charge of forming cartilage. The less dense parts of the bone, called cancellous bone, contain red bone marrow, which produces red and white blood cells.

Most bone diseases occur when bone cells no longer receive enough nourishment. Eventually, the body's calcium reserves become depleted, diminishing bone density or bone mass. This may lead to bone and hip fractures and even death. With more than half of all women over age 50 already affected by osteoporosis (albeit only in industrialized nations), it is obvious that the current approach of taking hormones or calcium supplements is a shot in the dark; it in no way addresses the imbalance in the liver and gallbladder caused by reduced bile output due to gallstones.

Rickets and osteomalacia are diseases that affect the calcification process of bones. A Look at Your Levels

You can have a high cholesterol level and a normal triglyceride level and be at risk for heart disease and strokes. You can have a normal cholesterol level and a high triglyceride level and be at risk for not only heart disease, but strokes and diabetes. And both levels can be high, meaning you are at a high risk for heart disease, strokes, and diabetes.

The point is that both levels don't necessarily have to be high to put you at risk for health problems.

Early Exposure to Pets Won't Up Kids' Allergy Risk: Study (HealthDay)

MONDAY, June 13 (HealthDay News) -- Exposure to pets in infancy and childhood probably won't increase a child's risk of developing an allergy to cats and dogs, and may actually protect against such allergies, new research suggests.

The first year of life appears to offer the greatest protection, the researchers said. Living with a dog before age 1 year was associated with about half the risk of developing a dog allergy in boys. Exposure to cats before turning 1 was associated with about a 48 percent reduction in risk for girls and boys, the new study reported.

"Exposing children to cats and dogs in the home is not going to increase the risk of sensitization to these animals. It might even decrease the risk," said the study's lead author, Ganesa Wegienka, an epidemiologist in the department of public health at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

Results of the study are published online June 13 in the journal Clinical & Experimental Allergy.

As many as 70 percent of U.S. households have pets, according to estimates from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. For those who are allergic to these animals, symptoms can range from watery eyes, a runny nose and sneezing to a full-blown asthma attack.

But experts haven't been sure if early exposure to animals might contribute to the development of those allergies. Some experts think that early exposure could trigger the development of allergies, while others suspect that early exposure could increase the immune system's exposure to a diverse array of bacteria, making it less likely to overreact to normally harmless substances, such as animal dander. This theory is commonly referred to as the hygiene hypothesis.

To see what effect, if any, childhood exposure to cats and dogs has on the development of pet allergies in children, the researchers tested blood samples gathered as part of the Detroit Childhood Allergy Study for the presence of a substance known as animal-specific IgE. The presence of this antibody would indicate that an individual was "sensitized" to that animal, which indicates an allergy. The study began in 1987.

At age 18, about 560 of the study's participants agreed to participate in this follow-up study. They provided additional blood samples and pet histories.

During their first year of life, 184 teens had an indoor dog and 110 had an indoor cat.

In males, the risk of having a dog allergy was decreased by 50 percent in those who had a dog during their first year. This association wasn't found in females, however. But when the researchers looked at teens born via cesarean-section delivery, they found that both males and females had a 67 percent decreased risk of dog allergy when they lived with a dog during their first year of life.

Wegienka noted that babies born via C-section aren't exposed to the diverse microflora that babies born vaginally are, which might make their immune systems more susceptible to allergies.

The researchers said that exposure to animals at other times in childhood didn't appear to be as significant as the first year. But, Wegienka cautioned that this study doesn't prove a cause-and-effect relationship between having a pet and avoiding allergies, just an association between those two factors.

"We don't want to say that everyone should go out and get a dog or cat to prevent allergies," she said, adding that the current study only found an association between a reduced risk and exposure to cats and dogs. "More research is needed, though we think this is a worthwhile avenue to pursue. How does having a dog or a cat change the home environment? And, how does that affect allergy risk?"

The authors said it would be logical to look at smaller and smaller windows of time, such as the first month or first three months of life.

Dr. Jennifer Appleyard, chief of allergy and immunology at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, said the development of allergies is very complicated. It's significant that this study found that early life exposure wasn't associated with an increased risk, she said.

"We're not likely to find one simple answer to avoid them [allergies], but this study suggests that maybe having pets -- whether or not it's protective -- maybe having them isn't so bad," Appleyard said.

Hemodialysis Patients - Taking Care of Them

People suffering from end stage renal disease (ESRD) and under hemodialysis may already have a different outlook in life. It may be that they already lost hope for a life they once had. However, anyone can help these individuals live happily everyday.

Taking care of hemodialysis patients can be very difficult, you will face many hindrances from them. Some will say that what you will do is nothing important as they are nearing the end of their lives. But, you must know that these persons must be reminded that they can still enjoy their lives while on dialysis. In addition to the basic needs, dialysis can become a part of one's daily or weekly regimen.

Pre-dialysis Regimen
Knowing the schedule of the patient's therapy is very important. If he is for the morning schedule, arrange an early morning breakfast. Most centers do not allow patients to eat during treatment. If the patient is diabetic, make sure that he receives his insulin shot and breakfast before treatment.

Another important note to consider when taking care of a hemodialysis patient is to give his medications only after hemodialysis. Most of these drugs are water-soluble and can be washed out of the system. Ask a physician about specific medications that can be taken during dialysis.

Moreover, patients are at risk for compounding hypotension during hemodialysis. The doctor must be consulted for any anti-hypertensive drugs that must be withheld or postponed after treatment.

Blood Works and IV Medications
If there is an order of a blood work, coordinate with the nurse in the unit on who will extract the blood. This will avoid too many blood loss and needle sticks on your patient.

Send I.V. medications, such as antibiotics and iron supplements, with the patient. The nurse in the unit will administer them, and this will avoid further needle sticks to the patient.

Monitoring The Access Site
Regularly assess the access of the patient by palpating the AV (arteriovenous) fistula, observing for a thrill or a vibrating sensation. If it is absent, notify the physician and the nurse immediately. Remind all staff to avoid using the arm where the dialysis access is for administering IV medications, taking the BP, or drawing blood. Avoid constrictive jewelries or tight clothing on the arm.

After the dialysis session, check the access site for any signs of bleeding, redness, warmth, discharge, or aneurysm. Monitor the patient's vital signs before allowing him to resume any activity. If bleeding occurs, apply direct pressure for 15 minutes. If bleeding does not stop, notify the physician and note the observation on your daily log. Make sure to remove the dressing after 24 hours.

Diet Changes and Water Restriction
Taking care of a hemodialysis patient also includes monitoring the food he ingests. Hyperkalemia is very common in hemodialysis patients, monitor serum potassium regularly. Teach the patient to avoid foods rich in potassium and sodium. Exchange orange juice with an apple juice since citrus foods and juices are high in potassium.

Each patient has limited water intake, depending on the doctor's assessment. Teach him how to control his urges and note his water intake. Provide frequent oral care to prevent drying on the oral mucosa.

Monitor for Bleeding
Blood-thinning agents are prescribed to most patients and used during dialysis, putting the patient at risk for internal bleeding. Monitor for black, tarry stools, bruising anywhere in the body, eye hemorrhages, and signs of severe anemia. Monitor his hematocrit and hemoglobin level for sudden changes and notify the physician when any of these symptoms occur.

Psychological Well-Being
The emotional well-being is very important in taking care of a hemodialysis patient. At most times, allow the patient to take control of his care to promote independence. More importantly, address the psychological aspect of ESRD patients since it causes many issues about employment, health, finances, and sexual functioning, leading to anger or depression.

It is very important that patients know that they are not alone in their times of crisis. Taking care of a hemodialysis patient gives you self-satisfaction and hope for those individuals who are sick.

Montgomery Gentry raises prostate cancer awareness (AP)

ATLANTA – Eddie Montgomery of the country duo Montgomery Gentry thought he was only getting a sore hip checked out when his doctor spotted a "shadow" on his X-ray. It turned out to be prostate cancer.

The singer was diagnosed in November, a time he describes as one of the most frightening of his life. But he was able to have the tumor surgically removed.

Now as a cancer survivor, the 47-year-old Montgomery and partner Troy Gentry want to bring awareness to the disease through a free concert. The concert is after the Atlanta Braves-Texas Rangers game on Sunday in support of Major League Baseball's contest, "My Dad, My MVP."

Exploring the Mystery of Endocrine Disorders

Disorders involving the endocrine system can result in a number of other diseases and physical conditions. One such problem is endocrine bone disease such as Osteitis Fibrosa Cystica.

This is a condition where a person's calcified bone is reabsorbed and then replaced by fibrous tissues. Underlying conditions such as hyperparathyroidism are often the catalyst for this type of bone disease. This type of endocrine problem might also be referred to as Von Recklinghausen's disease.

Von Recklinghausen's disease of bone results when a person suffers from the condition of hyperparathyroidism and is additionally found to have elevated levels of serum calcium, decreased phosphorus levels, and elevated levels of alkaline phosphatase.

Hyperparathyroidism

This is a serious health issue that is generally the result of an adenoma being present in the parathyroid glands. Hyperparathyroidism can also occur in instances of renal failure.

The bones will lose calcium, become thin and brittle and multiple cystic areas (osteitis fibrosa cystica) will be present.

The cystic areas are the result of calcium loss in the bones. The leached calcium salts are excreted through the kidneys and urinary system. This type of condition will often lead to fatigue, weakness, kidney stones and pathological bone fractures.

Radiology scans will clearly show the many cystic areas that are located within the long bones of the body. There may even be some cortical erosion noted in the phalanges and within the area of the skull you can find more of the cysts as well as granular mottling.

The amount of urine being excreted by the affected individual will sharply increase as the body attempts to rid itself of the excess minerals and salts. The blood serum is also noted to have increased levels of calcium and decreased levels of phosphates.
Treatment of choice is for the tumor to be surgically removed.

More about Endocrine Disorders

Cushing's syndrome is an endocrine disorder that results from excessive amounts of glucocorticosteroids being produced in the body. Although an underlying disorder of the endocrine system is the most common cause of this health problem there is another trigger that may be responsible.

Long term use of steroids can also result in Cushing's syndrome. Patients who are using steroid medication as part of a post-transplant regimen or those individuals who are taking steroids for chronic ailments such as RA (rheumatoid arthritis) and asthma are also at a higher risk for developing this syndrome.

There are certain physical characteristics that help a physician zero in on this diagnosis. For instance the patient may exhibit obesity and display a flushed, plump face. Rarefaction of the bones and pathological fractures are frequently noted. Females may also complain of physical concerns such as excessive body and facial hair. These women may also be suffering from an abnormal cessation of their normal menstrual cycles.

A vascular Changes in Body Joints

Knees, hips and other major joints will often be affected by avascular changes. Although these circulatory problems can often be helped by a simple lowering of the amount of steroids being prescribed many patients will still require surgery to replace the damaged joints.

An excessive amount of adrenocortical hormones is frequently the trigger for primary Cushing's syndrome. This condition can also result from adrenal gland tumors. In some instances adrenal gland hyperplasia is the causative factor and some patients develop Cushing's disease as a secondary effect related to a pituitary basophil adenoma. These latter two conditions are generally treated with total ablation of the adrenal glands.

Cretinism or Congenital Hypothyroidism

A deficiency in the level of certain thyroid hormones can result in both mental retardation and dwarfism. The possibility of a patient having this endocrine disorder is an avenue that should be explored immediately so that early diagnosis and treatment can be accomplished.

Clinical symptoms include retarded mental and physical development; a dull facial expression, excessive fatty tissues and significantly altered eyebrows. Patients who suffer from congenital hypothyroidism only have the inner aspect of their eyebrows present. The middle arch and outer eyebrow is missing.

A simple test will show that there is a lack of thyroid hormone present. This is all that is required to make a clinical diagnosis, but the supporting symptoms listed above are certainly factors to take into consideration. Treatment with thyroxine will create a dramatic improvement for these patients.

Hypopituitarism

This endocrine disorder is due to the lack of anterior pituitary hormones. The failure to secrete these important chemical compounds can result in obesity, or dwarfism accompanied by a delay in mental and sexual development. In either instance there may be additional orthopedic problems related to slippage of the femoral epiphysis.

Gigantism

This medical condition results from the production of excess growth hormones. The usual cause is an acidophilic adenoma. Extremely large amounts of growth hormones are able to trigger 'gigantism' in a person with epiphyses that have not fused together. In cases of gigantism the patient could suffer impairment and delays regarding their sexual and mental development.

Acromegaly

Another disorder of the endocrine system is known as acromegaly. This type of condition is the result of too many growth hormones being secreted once fusion of the epiphyses has taken place.

In these situations the individual will display thick, coarse skin and complain of generalized fatigue and weakness.

The skull, hands, feet, facial bones and mandible may be grossly enlarged in relation to other areas of the body. Once radiological scans are completed the X-rays are used to positively diagnose the problems with any enlarged bones. An actively growing adenoma could even result in an expansion of the sella turrica area in the skull.

Jailed Iran brothers win global health prize (AFP)

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Two Iranian doctors who were jailed three years ago for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government were awarded a global health prize for their efforts to treat patients with HIV.

Kamiar and Arash Alaei were arrested in June 2008 and accused of communicating with the United States in a bid to unseat the regime of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Kamiar, 37, was released several months ago and was on hand to accept the award in Washington, but his elder brother Arash, 42, remains in Tehran's Evin prison where he is serving a six-year sentence.

Until Arash is set free, Kamiar said he cannot move forward with his life.

"I feel I am not released yet," he said in an interview with AFP before he accepted the Global Health Council's Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights.

"The majority of nights I go back to prison and I continue my life in prison," he said.

Kamiar served two and a half years -- a term he remembers as "870 days, 3,800 hours" -- and is hopeful that Arash will be eligible for release soon because he has now served half his sentence.

He declined to discuss the details of his detention, except that he was kept in solitary confinement for two months. After eight months in prison, he was allowed to see his brother, he said.

The pair, known for their efforts to help drug addicts infected with HIV and improve conditions for sick prisoners, were not allowed to work as doctors while behind bars.

Instead, Kamiar said they took on the role of peer counselors, teaching fellow prisoners about basics such as hand-washing, and holding informal talks with them about HIV, tuberculosis, and infectious diseases.

The Alaei brothers are regarded as pioneers of AIDS treatment in Iran, where discussions about sex and drugs are often taboo.

Data is scarce about the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the Islamic republic, but according to UNAIDS there were 5,000-10,000 infections in 2009 and about nine percent of people with advanced HIV infection were being treated with antiretroviral drugs.

The brothers began treating HIV-positive patients in the late 1990s, and they developed a three-pronged program that integrated prevention, care and social support.

This "triangular" approach to AIDS care was first tried in a prison in their hometown of Kermanshah and later became recognized as a best practice model in the Middle East.

The Alaei brothers were not born in poverty but were taught by their father, a Persian literature teacher, to use their education to help others.

"He motivated us to do the public good, even if the community doesn't understand the situation," said Kamiar.

Physicians for Human Rights has helped organize a letter-writing campaign across 80 countries urging the brothers' release.

"The appeal has been to allow the brothers to do their work," said Susannah Sirkin, deputy director of PHR.

"This is not a political campaign. This is a campaign by colleagues, many of whom know the brothers and their work directly because they have worked in concert with them or been inspired by their pioneering efforts inside Iran."

Kamiar said he was detained when he took a summer break from his US studies and went to work in Iran for a few months, and has been unable to understand why he was jailed.

"When you do some good, you don't expect to be in prison," Kamiar said.

"But I never got disappointed because I believe what I did was right. I love my work, and until the last moment of my life I will do public health, specifically for neglected populations."

After his release, Kamiar quietly returned to Albany, New York where he lives with his sister and is finishing up his doctoral degree.

The dean of the school of public health at the State University of New York at Albany, Philip Nasca, told AFP that Kamiar used some of his time in jail to teach himself Spanish, and was able to speak it with local patients during a recent trip to the Dominican Republic.

"I think he kept his intellectual life alive and his mental life alive," said Nasca.

According to Jeff Sturchio, president of the US-based Global Health Council which gave out the $10,000 award, the brothers serve as a powerful symbol for health professionals worldwide.

"They really put themselves at risk in advocating for the rights of people living with HIV and AIDS," said Sturchio.

"If there are still places in the world where people are put in prison just because they are advocating for the rights of people with HIV, then that is a world that we would like to see changed."

Psoriatic Arthritis

Psoriatic arthritis is a type of arthritis experienced by some sufferers of psoriasis.

As in the most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis, the most typical symptoms of psoriatic arthritis are:

- Pain, stiffness and swelling of the joints
- Tender areas in and around joints
- Lower back pain, particularly in the sacrum
- A sausuage-esque appearance caused by swelling in fingers and toes known as dactylitis
- Tendinitis, especially around the feet areas
- Plantar Fasciitis

These last 3 symptoms are especially associated with psoriatic arthritis as opposed to other forms of arthritis.

This condition develops in up to 30% of psoriasis sufferers. The likelihood of developing psoriatic arthritis has a genetic component. Individuals with the tissue type HLA-B27 are more at risk. Different populations vary widely in the rate of occurrence of this antigen. However, it is important to note that other genetic and environmental factors mediate the disease process and possession of this tissue type is by no means a guarantee of eventual onset.

This condition has the potential to grow into a more serious joint condition. For this reason, an early diagnosis is beneficial as subsequent treatment helps to curb inflammation and mitigate damage to the joints. Psoriatic arthritis usually comes and goes in bouts, or flare-ups.

Diagnosing psoriatic arthritis is somewhat complicated as there is no specific test for the disease.

However, there are several possible indicators:

- Psoriasis in the patient
- Localization to the fingers and feet
- Ridged or pitted toenails and/or fingernails
- Negative test for rheumatoid factor (partially ruling out a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis)

How is psoriatic arthritis treated? Treatment is typically two-pronged. It is

Aimed curbing systemic (body-wide) inflammatory processes as well as local inflammations
Providing symptom control in the form of pain and swelling relief

For milder cases of psoriatic arthritis, NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) may be used. Ibuprofen, Naproxen and other over the counter NSAIDs are available for this purpose. There are also stronger NSAIDs available for particularly strong discomfort. However, these drugs do not come without their share of risks. Among them are possible damage to the intestinal lining and ulceration as well as potential cardiovascular and kidney problems.

Systemic treatments that have been gaining in popularity in recent years include the use of so called "Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs" and "biological response modifiers".

Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs act in a slow fashion and may take several weeks or more to take effect. These drugs are prescribed with the goal of reducing joint damage over time and curtailing psoriasis symptoms. They are, however, immunosuppressing compounds that can negatively impact liver and kidney health.

The other class of drugs en vogue right now are biological response modifiers. These drugs are designed with the use of recombinant DNA and act upon specific parts of the immune system as opposed to producing system-wide effects. These drugs, delivered by injection or IV, are used to mitigate inflammation.

Other available treatments include surgery for patients with markedly damaged joints, joint replacement and corticosteroid injections.

Perhaps the most valuable therapy for combating psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis is a healthful psoriasis diet, adequate sleep and exercise and a low-stress lifestyle.

HPV Vaccine May Cut Rate of Cervical Cancer 'Precursors' (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, June 16 (HealthDay News) -- The introduction of a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program in Australia led to a reduction in high-grade cervical abnormalities that are precursors to cervical cancer, a new study reports.

The researchers examined trends in high-grade cervical abnormalities, or HGAs, among women in Victoria, Australia before and after introduction of a national HPV vaccine program for all women aged 12 to 26 years.

The incidence of HGAs in girls aged 17 and younger who were screened fell by nearly 50 percent (from 0.80 percent to 0.42 percent) after the program was launched, but there was no decline in HGAs among older age groups.

"Our finding that the decrease in HGA incidence occurred in the youngest vaccination cohort before it occurred in the older, catch-up cohorts (who were more likely to have been previously sexually experienced) reinforces the appropriateness of the targeting of prophylactic HPV vaccines to preadolescent girls," Dr. Julia Brotherton, of Victorian Cytology Service Registries, and colleagues wrote in the report published in the June 18 issue of The Lancet.

"This is the first report of a decrease in incidence of HGAs within three years after the implementation of a population-wide HPV vaccination program," the study authors concluded.

But more work is needed to definitively link the HPV vaccine to lower incidence of precancerous cervical lesions, according to a journal editorial accompanying the study.

In their comment, Dr. Mona Saraiya and Susan Hariri, of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wrote: "The not-so-cautious optimist in us wants to hail this early finding as true evidence of vaccine effect. However, individual-level vaccine status was not considered -- as it perhaps should have been in view of the availability of such data in Victoria, [Australia]."

And, "as stated by Brotherton and colleagues, linkage between vaccination and screening registers is needed to confirm these findings independently of possible bias by screening policy or practice changes. Indeed, more rigorous epidemiological studies are needed -- many are underway -- to increase our understanding of HPV vaccine effectiveness against cervical disease," Saraiya and Hariri added.

"A demonstrable reduction of the burden of cervical cancer -- the main goal of HPV vaccines -- will take several decades," the editorialists concluded.

Dr. Elizabeth A. Poynor, a gynecologic oncologist and pelvic surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said: "This study is the first report on a large scale HPV vaccination program, outside the setting of a clinical trial.

"It demonstrates the important finding that an HPV vaccination program can lead to a lower incidence of significant HPV-related disease in young women. Because the study is not strong enough to demonstrate a "cause and effect," it therefore should be approached with cautious optimism," she added.

J&J recalls 40,000 bottles of schizophrenia drugs (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Johnson & Johnson said on Friday it has recalled 16,000 bottles of its Risperdal schizophrenia treatment and another 24,000 bottles of a generic formulation of the medicine due to consumer reports of odors in the products.

The company -- which has been beset over the past two years with recalls of consumer medicines, prescription drugs and medical devices -- said the latest two recalls stem from odors believed caused by trace amounts of a chemical called TBA found in pallets used to transport and store materials.

J&J last year recalled a number of over-the-counter drugs -- including its Tylenol and Motrin painkillers and its Benadryl allergy treatment -- because of the same musty or moldy odor linked to the chemical.

"While not considered to be toxic, TBA can generate an offensive odor and a very small number of patients have reported temporary gastrointestinal symptoms when taking other products with this odor," J&J said on Friday.

J&J said the recalled generic formulation of Risperdal, known by its chemical name risperidone, was sold by the company's Patriot Pharmaceuticals unit.

J&J, under close federal supervision, is trying to fix quality-control problems at its consumer medicines plants that have triggered most of the company's repeated recalls since late 2009.
