Alzheimer's Disease - The Memory Disease

A lot has been written and spoken about the memory disease - Alzheimer's. It has also been a celluloid subject and much has been done for its awareness. The symptoms in the early onset of AD start showing before the age of 60 and progresses rapidly and this kind of disease mostly runs in the family. Late onset of AD is a much common disease developing after the age of 60.

The reason behind the causing of AD is not known but it can be said that it may include both genetic and environmental factors. Earlier, the reason was guessed to be the buildup of aluminum, mercury, lead and other substances in the brain but it is no longer believed to be a cause. The most certain way of determining the presence of AD is to examine their brain tissue sample after their death. The common changes in the brain tissue are neurofibrillary tangles, senile plaques and neuritic plaques. Alzheimer's disease treatment is a drug treatment which works on slowing the symptoms of the disease and many a times there are no noticeable changes. Some other medicines may also be combined which are needed for agitated and aggressive behaviors, which may prove to be dangerous. It is also said that research is being done on early testing vaccine against AD.

AIDS - A Metabolic Disorder, Not an Infectious Disease

For several years, it has been known that AIDS sufferers develop a drastic imbalance of very important amino acids before they actually deteriorate. A balanced protein metabolism is the main prerequisite for a healthy immune system. If the concentration of some of the amino acids in the body is too high or too low the immune system can no longer fight acute infections. This is particularly true for AIDS diseases.

The physiological imbalances related to basic protein metabolism in AIDS patients can be caused by any of the above factors, which all have highly stressful effects on the body. To combat such severe stress, the body triggers stress hormones, such as cortisone, designed to break down muscle proteins into basic amino acids needed for emergency reuse. This effectively means that the body is feeding off itself. If the stress persists, the amino acid balance can no longer be maintained, which eventually causes the collapse of the immune system so typically found in the AIDS disease.

During the process of destroying its own cells to obtain essential amino acids, the body has to deal with a large amount of cell debris, including the fragments from destroyed cell nucleus. It seems that some of these DNA or RNA fragments are labeled as the retrovirus HIV. Since there are various types of such fragments, there are also several types of HIV, i.e., HIV1, HIV2, etc. as well. This may explain why there are so many people now who are HIV-positive, but never were infected by HIV-contaminated blood or were in contact with HIV-infected people. Research by Dr. Hulda Clark, Canada, showed that babies can test HIV-positive, despite the fact that their parents are HIV-negative.

HIV is much more common than most people think. Many people who go through periods of extreme stress may have a strong presence of HIV in their blood for which their immune systems produce antibodies. Since they are unlikely to test for AIDS, they may never find out that they have encountered this virus. Even if they underwent a reliable AIDS test, they may not test positive for HIV1. However, if the test also searched for presence of antibodies for HIV3 or another of its variations, these individuals may now turn out to be HIV positive. For many years, the testing facilities in most countries could detect only one of the many HIV types. Today, a person's blood may be screened for two types of HIV, which is still not enough to determine whether he is HIV positive or not (considering the high false-positive rates of HIV tests).

Unless the individual's stress reaction continues, he may lead a perfectly healthy life. However, if stress-caused cellular destruction becomes a long-term issue, the amino acid balance becomes increasingly disturbed. This in turn may drain the immune system to such an extent that it can no longer defend the body against even the low-level infection-causing agents that permanently linger in everyone's body. When the host's immune system fails to neutralize the germs, a simple bacterium can cause a life-threatening infection, as seen among many AIDS patients.

Drug addicts, very active homosexuals, babies born to mothers with an unbalanced amino acid pool, people who are in need of a blood transfusion or had one, and those who are undernourished, starving, or are otherwise traumatized, all are suffering from an unbalanced amino acid pool and are, therefore, possible candidates for HIV particle generation.Intense stress responses cause the breakdown of cell nucleus, which results in an increased presence of DNA or RNA fragments. The first and natural response by the body is to produce antibodies to these fragments. Multiple Sclerosis, malaria, hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis, glandular fever, papilloma virus warts, and many other ailments can cause the body to make antibodies for the retrovirus p24.

If immunity becomes subdued through any major illness or constant stress, a flood of disease-causing agents begin to invade the body. Wherever the body is most vulnerable and exposed is where the AIDS disease is likely to strike first.

Thyroid and Hair Loss Disease

Losing a little bit is to be expected, but losing a large amount of hair should be reported to a doctor. Although there are a few types of hair loss diseases, hair falling out is most commonly a symptom of thyroid disease. An example of a hair loss disease is tinea captits, which is also known as ringworm of the scalp. It is a fungal infection which attacks the scalp and hair follicles, causing hair to fall out. Alopecia areata is another hair loss disease. The main symptom of this disease is a patch of complete baldness. The cause of the disease is unknown, but there is evidence that autoimmune disorders and family history may play a role. While these conditions are rarer, a diseased thyroid and hair loss is much more common.

Thyroid problems cause losing hair because of the hormonal imbalance that occurs when the thyroid does not function properly. There are two different forms of thyroid disease. Hypothyroid occurs when there is too little thyroid hormone in the body, and hyperthyroid occurs when there is too much thyroid in the body. Both types of thyroid disease affect the metabolism in the body and also result in hair loss. Hypothyroid causes the metabolism to be too slow, resulting in rapid weight gain, while hyperthyroid causes the metabolism to be too fast, resulting in rapid weight gain. Either way, the hair follicles shut down so that the body can focus on correcting the hormonal imbalance. The non-functioning hair follicles cause the hair loss. Other symptoms of hypothyroid are dry skin, fatigue, and memory loss. Other symptoms of hyperthyroid include nervousness, increased sweat production, and a wandering mind. Both hyperthyroid and hypothyroid disease affect women more often than men, and usually occur after hormonal changes such as pregnancy or menopause.

As previously stated, losing some hair every day is common. In fact, the average person loses up to 100 strands of hair every day. These hairs are usually found on brushes, in hair drains, or on clothes and furniture. This is a normal amount, and should not be cause for alarm. More than this, however, indicates a problem. It is a symptom of both thyroid and hair loss disease, and should this occur you should be seen by a doctor. A simple blood test can determine if you have a hypothyroid or hyperthyroid. If this is ruled out, then the doctor will test for a hair disease.

Both thyroid and hair loss disease are treatable. Thyroid disease is treated by replacement hormone therapy. Hair loss disease can be treated by addressing the cause through anti-fungal medication. In both situations, although it takes time for the hair to grow back, there are ways to make sure the new hair is healthy and strong, and that the remaining hair is healthy. A diet rich in protein and healthy oil will improve the appearance of hair. Topical treatment such as oil and deep conditioning can also make a dramatic impact, as well as a hair cut.

Endocrine Bone Disease

Exploring the Mystery of Endocrine Disorders

Disorders involving the endocrine system can result in a number of other diseases and physical conditions. One such problem is endocrine bone disease such as Osteitis Fibrosa Cystica.

This is a condition where a person's calcified bone is reabsorbed and then replaced by fibrous tissues. Underlying conditions such as hyperparathyroidism are often the catalyst for this type of bone disease. This type of endocrine problem might also be referred to as Von Recklinghausen's disease.

Von Recklinghausen's disease of bone results when a person suffers from the condition of hyperparathyroidism and is additionally found to have elevated levels of serum calcium, decreased phosphorus levels, and elevated levels of alkaline phosphatase.

Hyperparathyroidism

This is a serious health issue that is generally the result of an adenoma being present in the parathyroid glands. Hyperparathyroidism can also occur in instances of renal failure.

The bones will lose calcium, become thin and brittle and multiple cystic areas (osteitis fibrosa cystica) will be present.

The cystic areas are the result of calcium loss in the bones. The leached calcium salts are excreted through the kidneys and urinary system. This type of condition will often lead to fatigue, weakness, kidney stones and pathological bone fractures.

Radiology scans will clearly show the many cystic areas that are located within the long bones of the body. There may even be some cortical erosion noted in the phalanges and within the area of the skull you can find more of the cysts as well as granular mottling.

The amount of urine being excreted by the affected individual will sharply increase as the body attempts to rid itself of the excess minerals and salts. The blood serum is also noted to have increased levels of calcium and decreased levels of phosphates.
Treatment of choice is for the tumor to be surgically removed.

More about Endocrine Disorders

Cushing's syndrome is an endocrine disorder that results from excessive amounts of glucocorticosteroids being produced in the body. Although an underlying disorder of the endocrine system is the most common cause of this health problem there is another trigger that may be responsible.

Long term use of steroids can also result in Cushing's syndrome. Patients who are using steroid medication as part of a post-transplant regimen or those individuals who are taking steroids for chronic ailments such as RA (rheumatoid arthritis) and asthma are also at a higher risk for developing this syndrome.

There are certain physical characteristics that help a physician zero in on this diagnosis. For instance the patient may exhibit obesity and display a flushed, plump face. Rarefaction of the bones and pathological fractures are frequently noted. Females may also complain of physical concerns such as excessive body and facial hair. These women may also be suffering from an abnormal cessation of their normal menstrual cycles.

A vascular Changes in Body Joints

Knees, hips and other major joints will often be affected by avascular changes. Although these circulatory problems can often be helped by a simple lowering of the amount of steroids being prescribed many patients will still require surgery to replace the damaged joints.

An excessive amount of adrenocortical hormones is frequently the trigger for primary Cushing's syndrome. This condition can also result from adrenal gland tumors. In some instances adrenal gland hyperplasia is the causative factor and some patients develop Cushing's disease as a secondary effect related to a pituitary basophil adenoma. These latter two conditions are generally treated with total ablation of the adrenal glands.

Cretinism or Congenital Hypothyroidism

A deficiency in the level of certain thyroid hormones can result in both mental retardation and dwarfism. The possibility of a patient having this endocrine disorder is an avenue that should be explored immediately so that early diagnosis and treatment can be accomplished.

Clinical symptoms include retarded mental and physical development; a dull facial expression, excessive fatty tissues and significantly altered eyebrows. Patients who suffer from congenital hypothyroidism only have the inner aspect of their eyebrows present. The middle arch and outer eyebrow is missing.

A simple test will show that there is a lack of thyroid hormone present. This is all that is required to make a clinical diagnosis, but the supporting symptoms listed above are certainly factors to take into consideration. Treatment with thyroxine will create a dramatic improvement for these patients.

Hypopituitarism

This endocrine disorder is due to the lack of anterior pituitary hormones. The failure to secrete these important chemical compounds can result in obesity, or dwarfism accompanied by a delay in mental and sexual development. In either instance there may be additional orthopedic problems related to slippage of the femoral epiphysis.

Gigantism

This medical condition results from the production of excess growth hormones. The usual cause is an acidophilic adenoma. Extremely large amounts of growth hormones are able to trigger 'gigantism' in a person with epiphyses that have not fused together. In cases of gigantism the patient could suffer impairment and delays regarding their sexual and mental development.

Acromegaly

Another disorder of the endocrine system is known as acromegaly. This type of condition is the result of too many growth hormones being secreted once fusion of the epiphyses has taken place.

In these situations the individual will display thick, coarse skin and complain of generalized fatigue and weakness.

The skull, hands, feet, facial bones and mandible may be grossly enlarged in relation to other areas of the body. Once radiological scans are completed the X-rays are used to positively diagnose the problems with any enlarged bones. An actively growing adenoma could even result in an expansion of the sella turrica area in the skull.
