Do you know what the term arthralgia means? It's a medical word, and refers to pain in the patient's joints. While some people exclude joint pain brought on by inflammation, in this article we use the term literally, meaning that inflammatory types of discomfort may be included. Let's talk about some of the medical causes that can lead an individual to have this sensation of arthralgia. There are many, and keep in mind that the ones noted on this page do not add up to a complete checklist.
Multiple myeloma
The first medical cause that we bring up on this page is a form of cancer. Multiple myeloma impacts the plasma cells of the patient with this illness. There can be a number of different symptoms, but which ones appear in one case may be quite distinct from those that show up in another. The patient may have headaches. The spine and the ribs are typical areas that might be affected by bone pain. Kidney failure can occur, and therefore symptoms related to that might be present. Nausea and itching are two possibilities in this area, and two others are dizziness and memory problems. For diagnosis, blood and urine may be tested. Imaging technology might also be used.
Lyme disease (LD)
A person gets this illness through bacterial infection. The bacteria is introduced to the person through a tick bite. Various symptoms may show up at particular stages of the disease. Arthralgia is one possibility, and it may show up, at least, in the latest, chronic stage of LD. As for earlier symptoms, muscle pain and headaches are possibilities. There is also a rash called erythema migrains by which LD is characterized. Strong fatigue is another symptom that may show up late in the infection. Noting the presence of the rash may be enough for a doctor to make a diagnosis of Lyme disease. Generally, antibiotics are used to treat people who have contracted this condition.
Gout
This condition used to be known as the disease of kings. In recent years, it has been noted more frequently, at least in Western areas. It is thought that somewhere between 1 and 2 percent of people in those locations will develop it at some point in their lives. Gout attacks revolve around joints that swell and become tender. The most frequently-affected location is the big toe, in which case the condition can also be called podagra. A high level of uric acid in someone's blood may lead to gout, although in roughly 50 percent of cases this is not even found.
